Graduate Student Researchers

Ingrid Murillo

Ingrid Murillo is a second-year PhD student in the Neuroscience and Behavior program at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where she also earned her BS in Psychology. Her research explores how the endocannabinoid system modulates circadian and ultradian rhythms, with implications for understanding circadian disruption in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using prairie voles as a model well-suited for studying sleep fragmentation, one of AD's earliest symptoms. She applies pharmacological compounds to ex vivo suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) slices via 3D-printed brain-on-chip microfluidic devices. Calcium imaging of the live tissue then reveals how these compounds affect SCN activity, advancing the search for therapeutic targets for AD-related circadian dysfunction.

Kylie Little

My name is Kylie Little and I am a first-year PhD student in the Neuroscience and Behavior program at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where I also earned my BA in Psychology. My research explores cultural neuroscience, investigating how early tactile stimulation and parental care impacts social behavior. Using prairie voles as a model allows for social behavior and biparental care to be examined. Immunohistochemistry allows for the visualization of the specific brain regions affected by tactile stimulation and parental care.
